Here's a theory for 'ya:I've noticed that the early (one patent) Pyrene WW2 Heavy Vehicle Type decal-type FE I have has an 'S' prefixed serial/lot(?) number.
Two of the later brass tag (2 patent) H-V-Ts I have show 'U' prefixed serial/lot numbers..
I'm wondering if the prefix indicates the year: S=1943, T=1944, U=1945 etc. This seems to correspond to the patent references. Two patents were effective in 1944, therefore one patent reference is certainly pre-'44. A decal-type military painted FE is certainly WW2 -- my guess beginning c.1942. I had a decal type two-patent HVT that went away recently. If it was a 'T' prefix I'd be willing to bet that it's more than coincidence. Further, I'm thinking that all brass tag, two-patent HVTs will be 'U' or higher prefixed (late/post war).
Anyone have Pyrene HVT FEs they wish to check against this?
